Solar panels – yes it is worth it. To maximise your benefit, you need to run as many things during the day as possible (dishwasher, washing machine, dryer, etc) as what you will earn exporting power back to Synergy is almost worthless. From memory, the most i earnt from exporting power for a billing period was $20. My power bills sat around $160.

One of the biggest benefits is being able to crank the aircon during the hot summer days without worrying about the cost. The output of the solar system should be able to cover that consumption.

The typical pay back period for solar panels is probably 5 years on average. The warranties on inverters is usually 10, panels are 25, so you should save money over that 10-15 year period.

Batteries are harder to justify financially, I think even with the new rebates. I personally think the WA rebate is a bit terrible as you are forced to give up some control of your battery. If you are lucky you might find the payback period of a battery might be 10 years.

I have both solar and batteries. I essentially don’t draw any power from the grid, but I still have a monthly bill of ~$60 (the daily connection charge). The batteries won’t ever pay for themselves, the solar panels will, but i wanted to be self sufficient and reduce my carbon footprint

Totally agree to this, my solar saves a lot of money, but a battery nope I wouldn’t take anyone’s money so they have control of something on my property…

Depending on usage style and capacities you can get a solar and battery combo that pays off in less than 10 years for sure.

The batteries really pay for themselves once you move hot water, heating and car charging to the off peak period. Then you’re paying 8.6c/kWh during the day, and hopefully covering your consumption until after 9pm most evenings.

I have solar and battery and generally agree with your sentiment – I’m fairly self sufficient except for the hottest and coldest days of the year. When the HWS dies I will go electric storage with an off-peak timer and replace the car with an electric model once it is end of life or there’s a significant economic advantage.

Panels were a Good idea. It’s not so great now and takes a while to return your investment but over all, it’s still worth it. Get the biggest system you can 10KW I think is biggest residential system.

Definitely need to have a battery or you’re just pumping in the power to them… Technology on these batteries is rapidly growing, ie: like phones, in 6months time,, the tech on what currently is available will be a lot better, do your research as there can be massive differences..

Just as an example and don’t quote my memory as 100% but my estimates here will be close. Basically, They pay you maybe 10cents per kWh in peak, and like 2cents per kWh off peak… Mean while charging you for power you are using at 35plus cents per kWh..
